Negotiating with Counter Offers

This article describes how sellers negotiate and counter offers on Mobius listings, what the buyer sees, and why a counter offer is binding.

When a buyer places an offer on your listing, you can accept it or counter it. Countering is how most negotiation happens on Mobius. This article is for sellers.

Finding offers on your listings

Offers appear on your listings in My Inventory. Turn on the Has offers filter to see only listings with active offers. The Top Offer Value, Top Offer Unit Price and Number Of Bids columns show where each listing stands.

Open an individual offer to see its full history, the number of offers on the listing, and whether it is currently the top offer.

Making a counter offer

  1. Open the offer you want to negotiate.

  2. Select Counter Offer.

  3. Enter your Negotiated Unit Price. This is the price you want to receive per unit. The total value updates as you type.

  4. Select Submit Offer.

You can also select Send Message to communicate with the buyer without changing the price.

What the buyer sees

Every price on your seller account is what you receive. You do not need to work backwards from a commission or subtract anything from your number.

When you submit a counter offer, we add the Mobius take rate on top of your price and show the buyer that higher figure. So if you counter at $0.005 per unit, that is what you get paid per unit if the buyer accepts. The buyer sees a higher price that includes our fee.

Set your counter at the number your business needs. We handle the rest.

Countering all offers at once

If a listing has several offers, you can counter each one individually, or counter all of them together.

Select Counter All Offers in the Your Offers section of the listing. The window shows the highest buyer offer and how many bids are awaiting your counter. Enter a price in Your Offer, or select +10%, +15% or +20% to set your counter above the highest buyer offer. Select Submit to send the same counter to every buyer awaiting your response.

What a counter offer commits you to

A counter offer is binding. If a buyer accepts your counter, the sale is done and you are contractually obligated to sell at that price. If several buyers have the same counter in front of them, the first to accept wins.

Submit a counter only at a price you are prepared to sell at.

Countering does not cancel the offers already on your listing. If you counter at $1.00 and no buyer accepts, the earlier offers are still there. You can come back a week later and accept the original top offer if you decide to. Nothing is lost by countering.

Pricing your counter

A few things worth knowing from what we see on the platform:

  • Countering 10% to 30% above the top offer is normal and rarely costs you the buyer.

  • If you have several offers clustered at a similar price, that cluster is a signal about what the market will pay for the part. Price your counter against it.

  • Countering far above where the offers are sitting will usually end the conversation. That is sometimes the right call, for example when you have a floor you cannot go below. Go in knowing that is the trade.

  • If you are not sure where to land, talk to your sales rep before you submit. Once a buyer accepts, the price is set.
